How to Apply Foundation

Apply foundation makeup: liquid foundation, cream foundation, powder foundation. Apply with foundation brush for ultimate coverage; set with loose pwoder or pressed powder.

Foundation, not the most exciting cosmetic but probably the one that causes the most grief. Apply foundation perfectly with the correct color and application tips.

It seems like no one enjoys dealing with foundation. But how important is foundation? Foundation is probably the most essential cosmetic because it is one of the necessary steps of basic skincare. For healthy skin, you have to protect it. That is where foundation comes in. Foundation protects your skin from the environment-the sun, wind and pollutants-things we face everyday no matter where we live.

The problem with foundation is that we make common mistakes while applying it. We get the wrong color; it looks "cakey" and sometimes accentuates the flaws we were trying to cover.

How to apply foundation for the best results? We need to learn how to pick the perfect color and apply and set it correctly.

How to choose the perfect color

The key to flawless coverage is not to look like you are wearing a mask. It is NOT possible to pick up a bottle of foundation at a store, hold it up to your face and get the correct color. Honestly, you will need to sit down with a makeup consultant and test the color. It is best to test foundation color with sunlight. The worst lighting is florescent. No one looks good in florescent lighting. Never, never, never test for foundation on your hand or wrist. For ivory/beige women you will need to check your foundation on your neck and jawline. Sometimes the neck is a little different color than the face, usually a little darker and more yellow undertone. Because you will blend your foundation at your jaw line, you will want it to match where it stops at the neck. For bronze women, you will want to match your foundation on your cheek and jaw line. Sometimes there is an unevenness of color and this will help even out your skin tone.

How to apply

There are mainly three tools you can use for applying your foundation: sponge, brush, and fingers.

  • Sponge: A sponge is great to give you a light, sheer layer of foundation. It makes the foundation very easy to blend, a necessity for foundation and keeps your fingers clean too! I bounce back and forth between this one and the brush. The downside, a lot of foundation can get absorbed in the sponge so it tends to waste product. You will need to clean your sponge after every use or do what I do, buy a bag full of inexpensive sponges at a department store and trash them after every use.
  • Brush: I love the brush. The foundation looks perfect when using a brush, I can't really explain why, it just does. Use a foundation brush for a couple of days and it will be hard to go back to what you were using before. The one problem, you have to clean it every time you use it or you will ruin the brush. If you have to reapply your foundation during the day, a brush is the only way to go!
  • Fingers: Fingers are great because everyone has them, you always know where they are, and they are inexpensive. I personally, don't like the feel of foundation on my fingers so it's not my favorite. But if you don't have issues like me, they work great. Can be hard to blend with so just be careful!

Set correctly

I never have understood how women can not set their foundation. It should be illegal! So here are three easy ways to set your foundation, no matter what your preference is.

  • Loose powder: Again my favorite but tends to be messy so be careful. Loose powder does not set into fine lines as easily as pressed powder does. It will set the foundation with a little more coverage but not be as heavy as a pressed powder can be. Perfect choice if you tend to be oily!
  • Pressed powder: Very convenient and that's why we love it. It is great for touch ups throughout the day because it does give more coverage then a loose powder does. You do need to be careful because too much can make you look...well like your wearing powder. Not exactly flawless.
  • Blot: As long as you don't have oily skin and not incredibly humid in your area, this will work great for you. You can purchase blotting tissues to keep handy or a facial tissue will work great too. Press to your face and blot softly with the tissue. It will take off the excess make up but will not mess up your makeup.

Can you help please. i always get a make up moustache. what am i doing wrong
Nov 29, 2008 12:36 PM
Chrissy Dolezal :
The powder that is used to set can be a pressed powder or a loose powder, not a foundation powder.

Chrissy Dolezal :
If you are getting a "mustache" you are probably applying too much foundation. Use less foundation, especailly around the mouth and nose. Also using a foundation brush or a sponge might help. Let me know if that helps!

Dec 19, 2008 10:07 PM
Chrissy Dolezal :
If I am remembering correctly, I think the white is actually caused by the foundation, not anything you are doing. I'll have to double check on it but I think it is caused by sunscreen in foundation. Is the foundation you are using formulated with sunscreen?
Dec 21, 2008 1:22 AM
Guest :
yes it does have sunscreen, MAC studiofix, please help, as I look horrible in pics (Iam dark skinned, but pics looks white!!)
Dec 21, 2008 12:57 PM
Chrissy Dolezal :
It shouldnt happen if you have your picture taken professionally but with a point and shoot camera, it will. It is because of the suncreen in the foundation. It is better to put on sunscreen prior to your foundation and then not use a foundation with a sunscreen in it. I would think MAC would have a foundation that does not have sunscreen but is the same color. If not, you can try to use a bronzer and see if that helps. Honestly, I think you will have to switch foundations.

why if im using foundation after a while it become oily, how to apply a perfect foundation?and what color of foundation or pressed powder suite for my tan skin tone?and i heard mac is the best brand.
Jan 26, 2009 11:39 AM
Chrissy Dolezal :
I'm not sure why your foundation is becoming oily. You could try a product to control the oil and see if that helps. Many companies have a prodcut like an oil matifier to control shine.

MAC is a good brand for foundation. Foundation is a product that you need to spend time and money to find the right one for you.

Hi there, im really hoping you might be able to help.
I got so fed up with having the wrong foundation i went to a beauty consultant and they tried it on in store! when she did it, it looked v near perfect, stayed on for ages and my other half commented on how good it looked when i arrived home.
I bought the foundation from her(liquid) - the lightest colour as hate orange but when applying it myself with a proper brush -i ended up quite patchy and a little orange - is there a particular trick to applying? ive tried 'blending' but it dries quickly.
Feb 22, 2009 8:03 PM
Chrissy Dolezal :
It might be the wrong formula for your skin type. You could try to mix a little bit of moisturizer with it and thin it out a little bit, as well as adding more moisture.

Honestly, I would take it back to see what they can do for you. Maybe there is a different formula that would work better for your skin. At the very least they should be able to help you apply it.

I must say this is some great information. I have a question. I have oily skin, which is better; liquid, cream or powder foundation?
Jul 28, 2009 10:16 PM
Chrissy Dolezal :
For oily skin - liquid will be better to cover skin imperfections, powder will help absorb the oil. If you need to use liquid for better coverage, then set with a powder.

NEVER use a cream foundation on oily skin.
Aug 14, 2009 10:43 PM
Guest :
So I heard that you should never apply liquid foundation with your hands but I see a lot of girls that do. Whats your opinion, thanks!!
Aug 17, 2009 6:58 AM
Chrissy Dolezal :
For liquid foundation I prefer a foundation brush but many people will use a sponge. Just make sure to wash either one after use.

You can use your fingers to apply makeup. The reason not to is because oil can mix in with the makeup which could make the skin more oily and more oil means dirt and pimples. But, it really doesn't add that much oil especially if the hands are clean.

Use whatever you feel comfortable with and whatever gives you the best results.

"my face looks perfect after application but always looks too "white" in pictures, what am I doing wrong"
I have this same problem it's reasurring to know that it's the SPF in the foundation!I am a lighter skin tone anyway and my foundation looks fine when i go out
After many times of blaming the flash on a camera it's such a relif. It's been driving me mad and i dont like to use too much bronzer and go down the orange route which im sure is a mistake everyones made in the past lol.
I will now start to look to see if they do my foundation with no spf just for nites out !

That is up to you. I prefer to use a powder to set a liquid foundation, but not everyone likes that. So the preference is up to you.

I've been trying to find a good foundation for my skin: it's dry in the mornings when I do my make up, but gets Tzone oily in the daytime. I've tried and spend a lot of $ on foundations, but can't seem to find a good one. Foundation either looks patchy and makes my skin dry or very oily and shiny. What should I do?
Oct 6, 2009 7:07 AM

It can be difficult to find a foundation you like. I would recommend trying bare minerals or a different type of mineral foundation. I've recently tried Covergirl and Olay Simply Ageless. It works well, only takes a little bit.

Wow, you really know your stuff but i was wondering whether you could help me. Well, i have really pale skin (seriously white) and i've tried every colour but i have found nothing so i end up looking orange (not a good look. Another thing, is i have quite dark freckles, and i can't find a foundation with full coverage to make my skin look flawless unless i cake it in layers of foundation. I need one which is pale, has full coverage and is fairly cheap and available at most stores. Please can you help...?
Nov 28, 2009 7:22 AM
Chrissy Dolezal :
I feel your pain with pale skin, it is very hard to find a foundation for light skin, especially one that is cheap. The cheapest will probably be Mary Kay, Ivory 104 is the lightest. It can be layered to cover freckles. (Although you should never try and cover the freckles, just accept them and go with it! It will make life easier.) Foundations that have the best coverage is Era Spray Foundation and Dermablend. Both are pretty expensive but will last a long time.

Um having a serious problem with the foundation,i have an oily skin and i put liquid foundation, but after i put it i feel my skin is exfolitated and unsmooth, what am i d0ing wrong??plz answer me
Dec 1, 2009 7:43 AM
Chrissy Dolezal :
Hard to say since I don't know what kind of foundation you are using but here are my two guesses. The first one would be you are using too much. It doesn't take very much foundation to cover, try using less. If that doesn't work then try applying it with a foundation brush.

Does this happen with every kind of liquid foundation? Maybe the foundation you have just isn't working for your skin type. Try a different one and see what happens.

Good Luck

I am using Urban Decay Surreal Skin Cream to Powder and I do not like the brush that came with it. Can you recommend another brush which will not break off and leave hairs in the foundation? Thank you

I use a brush from Japonesque. I have never had a problem with the hairs breaking off. I believe if you go to their website (just do a google search) it will tell you where to purchase them.

dont mean to be rude but i had a tip about how to use the make up sponges, i am a training beauty therapist and we have learnt tht if you soak your sponge in water and then ring it out before putting foundation onto it, it doesnt soak the foundation that much into the sponge.

Guest :
um... got any makeup tips specifically for guys?
Jan 16, 2010 11:13 PM
Chrissy Dolezal :
For layers of foundation it depends on the type of foundation you are using. Make sure it says on the packaging that it can be layer or buildable. As long as it can be layered, use as many thin layers as possible that covers what is needing to be covered and doesn't look cakey. For most foundations that will be around 2-3 layers. There are some that can be layered 5+ times. Also remember that it is not necessary to layer foundation over the entire face. Apply one layer to the face then repeat with more layers where it is needed.

This article was really good. But i have this problem, at school we have very poor lighting and i am told that i am really white and my nose and forhead gets really shiny.. I use foundation and pressed powder with a sponge, but it doesnt seem to work with the shiny skin. My twin sister uses the exact same foundation and powder as i do, and she doesnt have shiny skin.. I don't know what i can do.. I wash my face with a rag and dove soap, and i dont use lotion on my face... Whats the problem?? What can i do?? HELP!!! =)
Feb 6, 2010 6:08 PM
Chrissy Dolezal :
First off, just because you are twins doesn't mean you will have the same skin problems or that the same products will work for you. So remember that for future.

Here are a couple of ideas. You need to get on a good skin care routine. Dove soap is not going to cut it. If money is a problem, go to a drug store and see what they have. Look for something that has oil control. Also, you need to get a moisturizer. When your skin does not get moisture it will either dry out or it will over compensate. Sounds like your skin it over compensating.

Also, there are blotting sheets you can get that are very thin tissues. Gently press those on your face will absorb the oil. They come in small packs and can easily be carried in your purse or backpack.

I'm having the problem of looking white in pictures. BUT when I'm outside in the sunlight, my foundation on my face looks slightly darker than my neck. But when I take pictures indoors with the flash on, my face is extremely white. I use Maybelline 24 Hour Superstay makeup and I use their loose powder "Maybelline mineral powder finishing veil" to set it. I apply my liquid with a stippling brush, and the powder with a powder brush. Since the powder is white, does that have something to do with the "light reflecting" from the flash? I mean, I don't apply much of it though, so I'm not really sure. I saw the comment that said "maybe it's cause of the sunscreen" and I'm not sure if the liquid has sunscreen or not. And I can't really take the makeup out of Walmart to apply it to my jaw in the sunlight so yeah. I have the liquid in Nude right now, (and it's still a shade too dark out in the sun but too bright in pictures), and used to have the shade that's one shade darker than that (and never had that problem in pictures) but then it was 2 shades darker in the sunlight. Idk what to do. Should I go back to using the colored pressed powder? (Maybelline (the one that goes with the mousse makeup), its brown and it's pressed.) Please help!
Feb 17, 2010 9:16 PM
Chrissy Dolezal :
Most likely the foundation you are wearing has a sunscreen in it which it what is causing the white in the pictures. Either change the foundation to one that doesnt have sunscreen but if that is not an option then try and change the powder. See if that does it. Hopefully it will. I know its hard to find a good foundation!

Hey I have a question, so i use liquid foundation and use a sponge to cover my face. But once I get to schoool and hang out with friends and stuff, I start getting lines or wrinkles around my mouth, it's annoying and I don't know how to get rid of it.
May 13, 2010 7:44 AM
Chrissy Dolezal :
You might be using a foundation that is the wrong formula. Make sure the product you are using is oil-free and helps control oil.

Another problem maybe using too much product. Cut down on the amount you are using by taking a small amount and applying it all over then add more in areas that need more coverage. Light thin layers will look better then one thick layer.

Hello, I have never really used foundation, and truth to tell, I am a bit scared to : I heard that some of the makeup can actually get clogged in your pores and make them bigger? (or something similar? ^^). Also, does it not unenable your skin to breathe?
My skin is alright, not flawless, but no pimples or blemishes so I guess I would be ok with it. I would use foundation if I was certain it didn't damage my skin in anyway...

The thing is, I was thinking of applying a few contouring+highlighting techniques that I have found around the web, but would it look ok without a foundation base?

Many many questions... hehe... Thank you!
Jun 7, 2010 3:33 PM
Chrissy Dolezal :
Finding the right foundation is more than just color it also has to do with formula. If you don't have a lot of skin imperfections but still want the benefits of foundation (protects the skin from the environment, helps fight aging) then look for a powder or cream to powder foundation. It won't clog the pores, it won't damage the skin in anyway, as long as you wash your skin at night after wearing it.

Chrissy Dolezal :
You can use sunless tanning lotion on your face as well. Use 2 parts moisturizer and one part tanning lotion, mix and apply. Use a mask before and be careful when applying around the eyebrows and ears.

Many companies have also come out with a sunless moisturizer for the face if you don't mind purchasing another product.

That is a much better plan then trying to apply foundation from the neck up.

Also, if you skin is not bad, try going with just a concealer, tinted moisturizer and/or powder. All carry less pigment then foundation.
