Red lipstick is timeless in the world of cosmetics. Although it may not be everyone’s go to color, all of us can wear red lipstick when we follow these makeup application tips. Finding the right color whether it be a dark red lipstick or a true red, depends on many factors like the lip shape and skin tone. Follow these simple “rules” to finding the right red lipstick.

There are some personal factors that need to come into play when picking the correct red lipstick.
- First look at the size of the lips. If lips are small or thin, it will be best to stay away from dark lipstick shades. Darker lipstick colors will make lips appear smaller and thinner.
- The second factor to take into account is skin tone. For ivory and light beige skin tones, a true red will look best. Think of Snow White and how the beautiful red color looked wonderful against her ivory skin tone. For dark beige to the deepest skin tones of ebony, a burgundy red lipstick will look fabulous on the deeper shades of skin.
- The last factor would be the color of teeth. This is an important factor when picking any color of lip makeup. If the teeth are stained, it is very important to stay away from yellow or orange undertone lip colors. A yellow undertone will accentuate the stains on the teeth. By wearing a blue undertone, the teeth will appear whiter. Remember, there are many great products on the market that cost very little that will help whiten the teeth.

Because red lips are very dramatic it is important to have the rest of the makeup be more subtle. An Audrey Hepburn look is great for red lipstick. Keep the eyes neutral with a one all over shade of a light, shimmery eye color. Apply a black eyeliner as close to the top lashes as possible and apply a layer of back mascara. Keep blush to a neutral tone and just on the apples of the cheeks.
Remember, to not let the fingernails (or toes if its sandal weather) clash with the red lipstick. When wearing any shade of red on the lips, stick with a neutral, clear or a french manicure. If wanting to stick with a red nail polish, then make sure the reds match.
